Compute Gazette - 2025 First Issue in 25 Years

I was absolutely amazed when I saw the announcement that Compute!’s Gazette was coming back out after so many years of silence. My trusted partner from the 80’s that guided me through the tricks and treats of the Commodore 64 - it seemed like a dream come true that I may gleam over the pages again!

At last, two weeks ago my issue came in with the front cover screaming to me that “Commodore is back!” Feeling like I was 15 again, I raced off to my ManCave/Closet to delve in to my youth.

The pages didn’t disappoint. From the articles to the ads, my retro-engine was being refueled with the latest gadgets, information, and tricks for my favorite breadbox.

Issue 1 appeared highly focused on the reminiscing of the days of old and how the retro computers shaped several careers. It did include an excellent article on SIDPlayer which was something new for me, so just like the 80’s, I learned something new from the magazine and got to delve into another aspect of what’s out there for the C64. Further, the issue included an article on some recent games from LC-Games, a neat report on FujiNet, a historical walkthrough of Mega65, program listings (nothing for the C64 - darn it!) and announcements on community gatherings/groups.

Takeaway (for me), the magazine enticed me. Unfortunately, only about 60% of the content was of interest to me - but not surprising if they are trying to cover all things retro and not just Commodore 64. For the items that applied to me, I found the content informative, nostalgic, and fresh.

I appreciated that the magazine is offered as a digital only or digital/print. A reduced affordable cost of digital only may be of interest to me later down the road as the magazines start taking up real estate in my mancloset. But for now, I’m sticking with the digital/print with Issue 2 ordered.

Hopefully more C64 content (like great programs) will be forthcoming. I think most of my typing skills came from that - especially typing the word “DATA” and three-digit numbers

Looking forward to issue #2!
